Dive Zanzibar

Diving on Zanzibar

It is not only on dry land that Zanzibar offers an array of exciting experiences and wildlife.  Below sea level you will find beautiful landscapes, coral reefs and a multitude of fish in all shapes, sizes and colors.

Due to the tropical climate, you can dive by the coast of Zanzibar all year round. However, the best period is from November until the end of January – during this period the weather is at its best and is more predictable. The worst period for diving is from March until May because it is rain season. Diving season on Zanzibar starts in September and ends around March.

On Zanzibar you can go diving whether you are a beginner or an experienced diver – everyone can have wonderful experiences in the sea. The sea level varies from 5 to 45 meters and there is an average visibility of 30 meters. The temperature of the water is between 24 to 30 degrees Celsius, so it is always comfortable jumping in.

There are a lot of diving centers on Zanzibar, and most of them base their courses on the international PADI program. So if you have never dived before, you have the opportunity of getting started on Zanzibar.  And if it is not your first time diving, you have the possibility of upgrading your certificate so you can do some more advanced diving.

Since there are a lot of places to go diving, here are three places with different levels of difficulty that you should check out if you are on a diving holiday on Zanzibar.

Hunga Reef is a relatively small place but offers some unique experiences. There are a lot of fish here and they gather around the divers. You can go down 20 meters and near the bottom you can see moray eel and crocodile fish. The certificate level here is open water.

Leven Bank offers the experienced diver an underwater platform. The top of the reef is located at 18 meters and you are surrounded by clear water and a multitude of fish. Among others you can see devil-fish, reef-sharks and tuna. The certificate level here is advanced+.

Mwana Wa Mwana is the right place if you love coral. There are lots of these in this area which is characterized as an underwater paradise. While you are diving, you can experience colorful coral fish and if you are lucky, you will see turtles and the rare seahorses. The certificate level here is scuba diver.
