How to travel to Zanzibar
When traveling to Zanzibar which is located on the east coast of Africa, it is a good idea to search the internet for air travel options. It could be expedia.com, orbitz.com or one the many other sites available. Prizes for a round-trip ticket for an adult from for example New York or London to Zanzibar City are around 1200 – 1300 dollars and up. There is about a 10 minute drive from the airport to Zanzibar City.
Experiences and sights on Zanzibar
Located in the Indian Ocean, Zanzibar is the ideal vacation spot if you are looking for white sandy beaches and warm turquoise waters. Because Zanzibar is located close to the equator, the islands have warm weather all year round. However, the weather is at its warmest around the month of December which is the summer period of Zanzibar. But the average temperature is never below 24 degrees Celsius.
If you don’t feel like lying on the beach all day long, there are many possibilities for alternative activities. The islands have an interesting history and culture which can be experienced in Stone Town which you can find on UNESCO’s Worlds Heritage List. There are also markets and large spice plantations that you can visit. Zanzibar has a tangled past and was once home to the world’s largest market for slavery where approximately 45.000 slaves were sold. Today, the caves where the slaves were held prisoner, have been converted into a museum.
If you wish to experience the magnificent nature, you can visit the Jozani Forest which is the only National Park on the islands. Here you can among other things see the red Colobus Monkeys which are only found on Zanzibar.
If you want a more active holiday, you can also go diving, swimming with dolphins, and deep-sea fishing.
You can also go from Stone Town to Prison Island which is about 15 minutes away by boat. Here you can see the giant tortoises and it is also possible to go swimming and snorkeling.
The Zanzibar Land Animal Park is a great place to take your children. It is a zoo which primarily contains reptiles – and the children will have the opportunity to get close to the snakes.
