Zanzibar Jozani Fort

Jozani Forest

You can experience the magnificent nature in Zanzibar. Among other things you can visit Jozani Forest which is a small paradise in Zanzibar. It is the only forest on the island and the only natural forest area left in Zanzibar. If you wish to experience the original Zanzibar, this is the place to go.

In many ways, Jozani resembles a rainforest – not because it rains a lot on the island – but because the groundwater table is very high and therefore the vegetation has plenty of water all year round.

Jozani Forest also has an abundant wildlife. Among other animals, you will be able to meet the Red Colobus Monkey which can only be found in Zanzibar. It is particularly easy to get close to the monkeys in the morning. In the treetops of the forest, you find another and more shy monkey – the Sykes Monkey – you might not be able to get very close but it is fascinating watching them swing themselves from tree to tree.

There are other animals in Jozani Forest but monkeys – among others you can run into Aders Duiker (a small species of antelope), bushbabies and the elephant shrew. There are also rumors of the Zanzibar leopard being on the island; however, it has not been seen in years.

In addition to the many mammals, there are also reptiles in Jozani Forest. You can for example run into a Nil Varan (a type of lizard) if you are lucky.

The local rangers competently guide you along the small trails of the forest all the while finding and pointing out different animal and identifying the different birdsongs.

To get to Jozani Forest, you take the 9 or 10 bus from Stone Town and ask the driver to stop at Jozani Forest. The park is open from 7.30 AM to 5 PM and a day pass costs 10 dollars. Parts of the profits go to helping people in the area as well as to the work to preserve the forest.
